Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive neurologic disorder, with a disease trajectory in many cases of decades. Research across the past 15to 20 years shows that the gradual loss of patient autonomy has a negative impact on the life of the caregiver, resulting in decreased mental and physical health and decline in quality of life. Using existing research, this web seminar will provide a framework for assessing caregiver strain and identifying potential interventions. One model intervention will be described, i.e., the use of PhotoVoice to assist caregivers in talking about difficult issues they face.

Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Discuss research related to caregivers of those with PD;
  • Recognize factors or variables that may influence caregiver strain;
  • Contemplate interventions that may assist caregivers in coping with their role; and,
  • Understand the use of PhotoVoice, an intervention to assist caregivers in discussing difficult topics.

Presenters:

Julie Carter, R.N., M.N., A.N.P., is a professor of Neurology at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Ore., and a nurse practitioner. She has dedicated her career to improving the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease and their families, and has been an investigator in multiple clinical trials and is an original member of the Parkinson Study Group

Joyce Bredesen, D.N.P,. R.N., P.H.N., is a tenured associate professor at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn. Her research interest includes PhotoVoice, most recently with Parkinson’s disease; working with both care partners and support groups.

Moderator:

Gwyn M. Vernon, M.S.N., R.N., C.R.N.P., is co-founder and national director of The Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program at the Parkinson’s Foundation.
